Thaumatropes

Introduction

Thaumatropes are old-fashioned optical illusions, or “tricks of the eye,” that date back to the 1820s. Here’s how to make one for yourself!

Materials
  • 2 circles of white cardstock

  • Markers

  • Scissors

  • Hole punch

  • Tape

  • String

We have included a printable guide for the circles in the PDF below. If you don't have a printer, you can also draw your own circles or trace the circles in the guide by holding the paper up to the screen.

If you think this looks fun, wait ‘til you try these!
